Whole house vs rooms for a work crew

By The Mayra Housing team · Published 1 September 2026 · 4 min read

For a team working away, there are two common setups: take a whole house for the crew, or book individual rooms — sometimes within the same shared house, sometimes across a couple of properties. Which is right depends on crew size, how well the team knows each other, and the logistics of the job.

A whole house works well when

  • The crew is four or more and already works together day to day.
  • You want a single booking, a single invoice and one address for everyone.
  • Early starts mean a shared kitchen and a big table are useful.
  • You need secure parking and storage for shared tools and materials.

Individual rooms work well when

  • It is one or two people rather than a full team.
  • People are joining and leaving the job at different times.
  • Team members value their own space at the end of a shift.
  • The right-sized whole house is not available for your dates.

Cost

Per person, a whole house shared by the crew is usually the cheaper option, because you are using every bed. Rooms give more flexibility to scale up and down without paying for empty beds, which can be worth more than the saving on a changeable job.

If the team size might change during the project, say so when you enquire — it affects whether a fixed whole-house booking or a flexible room arrangement is the better fit.
